Your Essential Digital Packing List for Travelers Over 50

📱 Your Phone is Your New Safety System

In the 1990s, you wouldn’t leave your hotel without your purse stuffed with every document. In 2026, your phone IS your safety system, but only if you pack it correctly. Use this checklist to set up your Digital Safety Deposit Box before your next trip.

FOLDER 1: BUREAUCRACY (Paperwork Replacements)

These digital items replace physical documents and protect you if something gets lost or stolen.

Locked Passport Backup

  • Take photo of passport inside cover (photo page)
  • Take photo of passport inside back cover (barcode page)
  • Save both photos in iPhone Notes app
  • Lock the note (tap 3 dots → Lock)
  • Test that you can unlock it with your passcode

CBP Mobile Passport Control App

  • Download app from App Store (free)
  • Create profile with passport information
  • Add photo
  • Test login before travel

UK ETA Confirmation (if traveling to UK)

  • Apply online at: [official UK government website]
  • Save confirmation email
  • Forward to yourself with subject: “UK Travel – DO NOT DELETE”
  • Add to locked notes as backup

US Embassy Contact

  • Google “US Embassy [destination country]”
  • Create new contact in phone: “US Embassy [Country Name]”
  • Add address and phone number
  • Repeat for each country you’re visiting
FOLDER 2: MEDICAL (Health Safety)

Critical health information that could save your life in an emergency.

Digital Prescription Ledger

  • Create locked note titled “Prescriptions”
  • For each medication, include:
      • Generic name (not just brand name)
      • Dosage
      • Doctor’s name and phone number
      • Pharmacy name and phone number
  • Update before every trip

Medical Device TSA Script (if applicable)

  • Create note with exact wording to use at TSA
  • Example: “I have a medical device that requires hand-checking. May I please have a manual screening?”
  • Include device name and doctor’s note if needed
  • Practice saying it out loud before travel

Emergency Medical Info

  • Set up Medical ID in iPhone Health app
  • Include allergies, blood type, emergency contacts
  • Make accessible from lock screen
FOLDER 3: IN-FLIGHT (Offline Entertainment)

Download everything BEFORE you leave home—you can’t download in the air!

Pre-Downloaded Streaming Content

  • Netflix: Download 2-3 movies or series episodes
  • Amazon Prime: Download backup content
  • YouTube Premium: Download favorite channels (if subscribed)
  • Do this 1-2 days before departure while on home Wi-Fi

E-Reader Content

  • Download Kindle app (if you don’t have it)
  • Download 2-3 books for the trip
  • Download magazines or newspapers
  • Test that you can open them offline

Podcasts & Audiobooks

  • Download favorite podcasts
  • Download audiobooks from Audible/Libro.fm
  • Create offline playlist in Spotify (if subscribed)
FOLDER 4: HARDWARE (Power & Protection)

The physical items that keep your Digital Safety Deposit Box running.

Modern Power Bank

  • Check manufacture date (replace if older than 3 years)
  • Look for heat-monitoring safety features
  • Recommended brands: Anker, Mophie, Belkin
  • Charge fully before departure
  • Pack in carry-on (NOT checked luggage)

Charging Cables

  • Pack 2 charging cables (one backup)
  • Bring wall adapter with USB ports
  • Consider international adapter if traveling abroad

Wallet/Luggage Tracker

  • Purchase AirTag or Tile tracker
  • Set up in “Find My” app (iPhone) or Tile app
  • Place one in wallet
  • Place one INSIDE suitcase (in interior pocket, not outside)
  • Test tracking before you leave
FINAL PRE-TRIP CHECKLIST

48 Hours Before Departure:

  • Charge all devices to 100%
  • Test that all locked notes open with passcode
  • Verify all downloads work offline (turn on airplane mode and test)
  • Check that AirTags are tracking correctly

At the Airport:

  • Keep phone charged above 50%
  • Have power bank in personal item (easy access)
  • Screenshot boarding pass as backup

At Your Destination:

  • Locate nearest US Embassy (if international)
  • Save hotel address in phone contacts
  • Take photo of hotel room number

BONUS: What If My Phone Dies or Gets Stolen?

Backup Plan:

  • Print ONE copy of essential info (passport, prescriptions, embassy contact)
  • Store in hotel safe (not in your luggage)
  • Give copy to travel companion if traveling with someone
  • Enable “Find My iPhone” BEFORE you leave home
