The Ultimate Packing List

Cross-country or international, packing smart is the difference between dragging your trip around and actually enjoying it. Here's everything you need without the extra weight.

Resort pool with a fire bowl at night in Cabo San Lucas

Part 1: Any trip in the USA

Clothing essentials

A mix of casual and slightly dressy pieces that layer: t-shirts, a light sweater, jeans, one polished top. A capsule style keeps it light. My capsule wardrobe guide shows how. Add weather gear for the season and comfortable shoes for daytime walking and evenings out.

Toiletries and personal care

Travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and toothpaste in a good toiletry bag. Moisturizer and sunscreen in every season. Prescriptions plus a small first-aid kit.

Electronics

Phone and tablet chargers, a portable charger for long days out, and headphones or earbuds for flights and downtime.

Other essentials

Your reservations, IDs, and health insurance cards. Healthy snacks and a refillable water bottle you fill after airport security.

Part 2: Going international

Everything above, plus:

Climate and culture

Layers matched to the destination's climate, and attire that respects local customs. Walking shoes that work with local style.

Travel documents

A passport valid at least six months past your return date, any visas, and copies of everything: one printed set packed separately, one photo set on your phone.

Power and language

A universal power adapter (one plug that works in any country) is critical. Language books or e-books help you learn the basics.
